Contract Type: Full-time/Permanent

Do you have the resilience, patience and commitment required to help young learners overcome challenges and thrive in an inclusive educational environment?

GSL Education are welcoming applications for the role of SEMH Teaching Assistant to work in a Winton based school that supports students with social, emotional, and mental health needs. This is a meaningful opportunity to help young people who may struggle with managing their feelings and behaviour in a classroom setting.

As a SEMH Teaching Assistant you will work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral staff to provide consistent and personalised support. You will help create a calm, safe, and encouraging space where students can feel confident, cared for, and ready to learn. Your support will play a big part in their growth—both in and out of the classroom.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide emotional support to students in times of difficulty, helping them manage stress, anxiety and frustration constructively.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and support staff to develop and implement tailored learning strategies for students with SEMH.
  • Support students with SEMH difficulties in both individual and group settings, encouraging their participation and helping them regulate their emotions and behaviours.
  • Encourage positive social interactions among students, promoting the development of healthy peer relationships.
  • Observe, record and report students’ progress and well-being, liaising with teachers, parents and external professionals as required.
  • Create a nurturing environment that allows students to feel secure and valued, reducing anxiety and fostering a sense of belonging within the school.

Requirements:

  • Experience working as a Teaching Assistant or in a similar role supporting students with SEMH, SEN, or behavioural difficulties.
  • A Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning or equivalent (e.g., Childcare, Youth Work) would be advantageous.
  • A clear understanding of SEMH difficulties and the impact these can have on students' academic performance and emotional well-being.
  • The ability to remain calm under pressure, providing a stable and reassuring presence to students in moments of emotional distress.
  • Patience, empathy and strong communication skills to support students effectively and work closely with other professionals.
  • The ability to develop positive, trusting relationships with students, helping them to feel comfortable in a classroom environment.
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).

  • The chance to work in a rewarding and impactful role within a supportive school setting.
  • A pathway to securing permanent employment within an inclusive educational environment.
