About the Role
As a Support Worker within an SEN/SEMH setting, you will be at the heart of providing essential support to students with diverse needs. Your role will involve one-on-one and small group interventions, helping students with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties to access the curriculum and develop the skills necessary for their future success.
Responsibilities of the Support Worker:
- Provide direct support to students with SEN, SEMH and complex behavioural needs, both in the classroom and during extracurricular activities.
- Assist in the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs).
- Foster independence and self-confidence in students, encouraging positive behaviour and emotional development.
- Support students in accessing the curriculum, tailoring your approach to meet each student’s individual needs and abilities.
- Help with personal care tasks, including hygiene, mobility and eating, ensuring that all tasks are carried out with dignity and respect.
- Assist in the management of challenging behaviours, using de-escalation strategies and positive reinforcement.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress, challenges and behaviour and contribute to review meetings.
- Build positive relationships with students, promoting a caring, safe and nurturing environment.
- Support the implementation of safeguarding and school policies, ensuring the safety and well-being of all students.
The successful candidate will have:
- Experience working in SEN, SEMH, or similar support roles within an educational or care setting.
- A relevant qualification such as Level 2 or Level 3 in Health and Social Care, Teaching Assistance, or equivalent (desirable but not essential for experienced candidates).
- A solid understanding of behaviour management, de-escalation techniques and the safeguarding of vulnerable students.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students and work collaboratively with staff.
- A patient, compassionate and proactive attitude, capable of remaining calm under pressure and adapting to changing needs.
- A genuine passion for supporting students with complex needs and contributing to their development.
- Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the update service (or be willing to apply for one).
