GSL Education are seeking a full-time Primary SEN Teaching Assistant (SEN TA) for a specialist primary school in Sheffield.

Role Overview: As a Primary SEN Teaching Assistant (SEN TA), you will play a crucial role in creating a supportive and structured learning environment for children with a range of additional needs. Working closely with class teachers, SEN specialists, and therapists, you will provide individualised support, ensuring that each child receives the assistance they require to thrive both academically and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities of Primary SEN Teaching Assistant (SEN TA): 

  • One-to-one and small group support, helping students engage with their learning and develop essential skills.
  • Implementing personalised learning plans, adapting teaching materials to meet each child’s unique requirements.
  • Encouraging social and emotional development, using strategies to promote confidence, resilience, and independence.
  • Providing sensory and behavioural support, using de-escalation techniques when necessary.
  • Assisting with speech and language interventions, working alongside therapists to support children’s communication needs.
  • Helping with structured routines, ensuring a safe, consistent, and engaging learning experience.
  • Supporting personal care needs, including toileting and mobility assistance when required.
  • Monitoring progress and providing feedback, contributing to individual education plans (IEPs) and liaising with SEN professionals.

Requirements of Primary SEN Teaching Assistant (SEN TA): 

  • Be available full-time, with a commitment to consistency and reliability.
  • Have previous experience working with children with SEN in a primary school setting.
  • Hold a relevant qualification in Education, Childcare, Health & Social Care, or Special Educational Needs Support (e.g., CACHE Level 2/3, NVQ, or equivalent).
  • Have experience with alternative communication methods, such as Makaton, PECS, or AAC devices (desirable).
  • Be familiar with positive behaviour management strategies and de-escalation techniques.
  • Possess a patient, empathetic and proactive approach to working with children.
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years, barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the update service (or be willing to apply for one).
