In this rewarding role, you will act as a mentor and role model, fostering a sense of security, trust and confidence in children who may have experienced trauma, anxiety, or difficulties regulating their emotions.

Role Overview:

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant -Primary (TA- Pri), you will provide tailored support to pupils with SEMH needs, helping them overcome barriers to learning and build confidence in the classroom. You will work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals to implement strategies that foster emotional regulation and positive behaviour. This role requires patience, empathy and a commitment to ensuring that every child has access to high-quality education and emotional support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Implement individualised learning and behaviour plans in collaboration with the SENCO and class teacher.
  • Support students in managing their emotions and developing positive coping strategies.
  • Foster a nurturing and structured environment to promote confidence and engagement in learning.
  • Assist in delivering interventions focused on emotional well-being, social skills and self-regulation.
  • Encourage positive interactions and relationships between pupils and staff.
  • Support classroom activities, ensuring that learning is accessible and inclusive.
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, providing feedback to teachers and support staff.

Requirements:

  • A relevant qualification in education, psychology, counselling, or child development (e.g., CACHE Level 3, NVQ, degree in a related field).
  • Previous experience supporting children with SEMH needs in a school, alternative provision, or youth work setting.
  • Strong understanding of the primary curriculum and how to adapt learning for children with SEMH challenges.
  • Ability to implement behaviour management strategies and de-escalation techniques.
  • A strong understanding of attachment theory, trauma-informed practices and behaviour management strategies.
  • Resilience, patience and a nurturing approach to supporting young learners.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with staff and parents.
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
