GSL Education are seeking a dedicated Learning Support Assistant to work 1:1 with Non-Verbal pupils at a special educational needs (SEN) school in Colchester. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone patient, empathetic and committed to helping students overcome barriers to communication and learning.

As a Learning Support Assistant at a special educational needs (SEN) school, you will play a key role in supporting students in developing their confidence, skills, and independence within a nurturing environment. Working closely with teachers and other support staff, your contribution will be vital in creating a positive and inclusive learning experience. Responsibilities of the Learning Support Assistant:

  • Provide 1:1 support to non-verbal students, using alternative communication methods to facilitate learning.
  • Assist in managing and reducing challenging behaviours with patience and effective strategies.
  • Collaborate with teachers to implement tailored learning plans based on individual student needs.
  • Create a positive, inclusive classroom environment where students feel safe and supported.
  • Support students with personal care and life skills development as needed.
  • Maintain strong communication with staff, parents, and external professionals.

Requirements of the Learning Support Assistant:

  • Previous experience working with non-verbal students or in a special educational needs (SEN) setting.
  • Knowledge of sign language is preferred to facilitate communication with non-verbal students.
  • A calm, patient, and adaptable approach to managing challenging behaviour.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, to engage with students and staff.
  • A genuine commitment to supporting the educational and emotional needs of students with special educational needs (SEN).
  • Have an updated CV (covering last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the update service (or be willing to apply for one).
