Specialist Teaching Assistant

Location: York, North Yorkshire

Start Date: January 2025
Salary: £83 - £100
per day

Contract Type: Supply/Full-Time/Part-Time

If so, we want you to join our dedicated team at an excellent Client Secondary School in York, North Yorkshire, to join asa Specialist Teaching Assistant, starting in January 2025.

Specialist Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Provide targeted literacy support to students with Special Educational Needs, working 1:1 or in small groups to develop reading, writing, and comprehension skills.
  • Assist students in accessing the full curriculum by embedding and developing literacy skills, ensuring that they can engage with all subjects effectively.
  • Work proactively with the English Department and Inclusion team to design and implement personalized learning plans tailored to individual student needs.
  • Create and adapt learning materials that support literacy development and cater to the diverse needs of SEN students.
  • Deliver and support literacy programs such as Ruth Miskin or Phonics, using these approaches to improve student attainment and engagement.
  • Track and assess student progress in literacy, providing regular feedback to teachers, the Inclusion team, and parents to inform future planning.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in literacy education and SEN support.

Specialist Teaching Assistant Requirements:

  • Relevant qualifications in Literacy or Special Educational Needs (e.g., Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning, Literacy Specialist courses).
  • Proven experience working with SEN students, particularly in literacy support, within a secondary school setting.
  • Familiarity with literacy intervention programs such as Ruth Miskin or Phonics is desirable.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with teaching staff, the Inclusion team, and other professionals to create a supportive and effective learning environment.
  • A creative and energetic approach to developing and delivering literacy programs that engage and inspire students.
  • Hold an Enhanced DBS registered to the update service or be happy to apply for a new one.
