SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Locks Heath
Salary: £12.82 - £14.72 per hour (Depending on experience)
Start Date: Immediate
Contract: Full-time/Part-time
GSL Education are seeking an SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming client school in Locks Heath. As an SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant, you’ll work closely with students who have social, emotional, and mental health challenges, helping them feel supported, understood, and empowered to succeed in school.
Role Overview:
In this rewarding role as an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you’ll play a key role in supporting students with diverse needs, assisting them both academically and emotionally. You’ll be a positive influence, helping students build confidence, develop social skills, and engage meaningfully in their education.
Responsibilities of a SEMH Teaching Assistant:
- Assist students with social, emotional, and mental health challenges by providing tailored support during lessons and activities.
- Foster a safe and nurturing classroom atmosphere where students feel comfortable expressing themselves.
- Work with teachers to implement personalised strategies and interventions that promote emotional well-being and positive behaviour.
- Observe and monitor student behaviour and progress, providing regular feedback to teachers and parents.
- Motivate students to engage in classroom activities and contribute positively to group work.
- Be a source of emotional support for students, helping them navigate their feelings and develop coping strategies.
- Support communication between students and staff, encouraging social interactions and helping to resolve conflicts.
- Help deliver lessons and activities that address both academic content and social-emotional learning.
An Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- A degree or qualification in psychology, or a related field (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification).
- Previous experience working with children or young people, particularly those with SEMH needs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and staff.
- A patient and empathetic approach to understanding students' individual needs and challenges.
- The ability to adapt to different situations and respond effectively to the varying needs of students.
- A collaborative mindset, willing to work closely with teachers and other support staff.
- Knowledge of safeguarding practices and a commitment to creating a safe learning environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills to help students navigate challenges and promote resilience.
- A current enhanced DBS check registered on the Update Service or a willingness to apply for one.
