GSL Education Bournemouth Branch are looking for a SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a dynamic school in Southbourne, supporting their dedicated team in providing inclusive education and pastoral care.

About the role:
As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play an important role in helping students who face mental health challenges as they go through their education. You will work closely with teachers and families to create a supportive environment that meets each student’s emotional and mental health needs. This job is a rewarding opportunity to make a positive difference for young learners in Southbourne while gaining valuable experience in mental health support.

Essential Qualities That We Are Looking For:

  • Provide caring and understanding support to students with SEMH needs, helping them manage their emotions and develop coping strategies.
  • Help carry out behaviour management strategies by working with teachers and the SENCO to create a positive learning environment.
  • Offer personalised support to students in and out of the classroom, ensuring they can access lessons and fully participate in school activities.
  • Build trusting relationships with students to boost their self-esteem and encourage positive social interactions.
  • Collaborate closely with educational psychologists, social workers, and other agencies to provide well-rounded support for students with SEMH needs.
  • Track and report on student progress, contributing to reviews and assessments to aid their educational and personal growth.

The Successful Candidate Will:

  • Experience working with students who have SEMH needs in a school or similar environment.
  • Understanding of SEMH issues and effective ways to support students.
  • Patience, resilience, and a calm attitude to handle challenging situations sensitively.
  • Strong communication skills to connect well with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues.
    • Ability to work well as part of a team, positively contributing to the school community.
