SEMH Teaching Assistant (Primary)
Location: Gateshead, Newcastle
Salary: £75 - £110 per day
Start Date: ASAP

GSL Education’s Newcastle branch is looking for a compassionate and committed SEMH Teaching Assistant to join primary schools across Gateshead. This role is ideal for individuals with a passion for supporting young learners with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them to thrive in both their personal and academic development.

Job Summary:
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant (Primary), you will work closely with primary-aged students who experience SEMH challenges, providing tailored support to help them engage positively in school life. You will play a key role in fostering a nurturing learning environment and supporting students in overcoming barriers to learning and social integration.

Key Responsibilities for SEMH Teaching Assistant (Primary):

  • Provide one-to-one or small group support to students with SEMH needs, focusing on their emotional well-being and academic progress.
  • Assist in the implementation of individual learning plans, behaviour strategies, and interventions to help students regulate their emotions.
  • Build trusting relationships with students, helping to improve their self-esteem, social skills, and resilience.
  • Monitor and report on student progress, communicating with teachers and SENCOs to adapt support plans when needed.
  • Support the class teacher with day-to-day classroom activities, ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment.
  • Help manage challenging behaviours using positive reinforcement techniques and de-escalation strategies.
  • Encourage and guide students in developing positive coping mechanisms and social interactions.

Essential Requirements for SEMH Teaching Assistant (Primary):

  • Previous experience working with children, ideally in an educational setting, and with a focus on SEMH.
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by children with SEMH needs and strategies to help them overcome these barriers.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students and staff.
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience, with a genuine passion for supporting students’ emotional and educational development.
  • Flexibility and the ability to work well as part of a team in a dynamic school environment.
  • A valid DBS registered on the Update Service or willingness to apply for one.
