Graduate Teaching Assistant (SEN)
Location: Gateshead, Newcastle
Salary: £75 - £110 per day
Start Date: ASAP

GSL Education’s Newcastle branch is seeking an enthusiastic Graduate Teaching Assistant to support students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in schools across Gateshead. This role is ideal for recent graduates who are passionate about education and eager to gain valuable experience working with children and young people with additional needs.

Job Summary:
As a Graduate Teaching Assistant (SEN), you will work closely with students who require additional support due to their SEN. You will provide both academic and emotional support, ensuring that students can access the curriculum and participate fully in school life. This role involves working alongside teaching staff to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment, helping students overcome barriers to their learning and personal development.

Key Responsibilities for Graduate Teaching Assistant:

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to students with SEN, helping them engage with their learning.
  • Assist in implementing personalised Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs) and other learning strategies tailored to individual students.
  • Work closely with teaching staff to deliver lessons that meet the needs of SEN students, ensuring they can access the curriculum.
  • Support students' social and emotional development, helping them build confidence and resilience.
  • Help manage challenging behaviour using positive reinforcement and de-escalation techniques.
  • Encourage independence and self-confidence in students, promoting their personal growth and learning development.
  • Liaise with SENCOs, teachers, and other professionals to monitor student progress and adapt support as needed.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of students, following all safeguarding protocols.

Essential Requirements for Graduate Teaching Assistant:

  • A degree in any subject (relevant degrees such as Psychology, Education, or Social Sciences are advantageous).
  • Previous experience working with SEN students or in an educational setting is desirable but not essential.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students and staff.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting students with additional needs.
  • The ability to remain calm under pressure and use initiative when faced with challenges.
  • A valid DBS registered on the Update Service, or a willingness to apply for one.
